6. Personal status. I agreed to drop the clause.
7. Real property. Chinese contested this vigourously but I hope to secure retention of the formula ending "in accordance with conditions and requirements prescribed in the laws and regulations of that high contracting party"
see your telegram No.1573) in return for the dropping of 'carrying on of commerce" in Article 6.

8. Master nationality. I agreed to drop and to record our views in the agreed minute.
9 Chinese (group undee.] adding the following sentence to exchange of notes: "it is understood that those agreements and understandings if confirmed by Your Excellency's Government shall be considered as forming an integral part of the treaty signed to-day and shall be considered effective upon the date of entrance into force of that treaty". I request your confirmation that there is no objection to this.
10. Texts of the treaty and exchange of notes are now agreed subject to the following:-
(a) our agreeing to drop "carrying on of commerce" from article 6.
(b) acceptance by both Governments of proposal made in paragraph 4 above.
(c) Chinese Government's agreeing to land formula.
(d) our acceptance of addition notes in paragraph 9 above.
(e) Kowloon.
11. Minister for Foreign Affiars would like to sign on January 1st. Work on texts is now proceeding and I will telegraph details of final form in a day or two. My full · powers have arrived but those for Indian representative have not and will have to be telegraphed.
